January 13th marked a full year since the last reported polio case in India - a major milestone for public health.  Can India take this success to other health challenges in the country, including other vaccine-preventable diseases?  Ramanan Laxminarayan, CDDEP Director and Vice President for Research and Policy at the Public Health Foundation of India, joined CNN-IBN to discuss the issue with Dr. Nata Menabde of the WHO.  Watch below:

We can only wonder about the fallout from the recent revelation of a CIA-organized vaccination campaign in Pakistan, which concurrently collected DNA samples in the hopes of pinpointing the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden.  Pakistan, already a harbor of suspicion towards global vaccination efforts, is also considered to be a ground-zero for polio eradication.

With GAVI's enormous fundraising success last week, there is great hope within the global vaccine community.  In the middle of the conversation about strategy is India – a test case for worldwide vaccination efforts.  Approximately 27 million children are born in India each year – the largest birth cohort in the world – but less than 44% receive a full schedule of vaccinations.

The "global decade of vaccines" is upon us.  Such was the call to action issued by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2010.  For their part, the Gates Foundation pledged $10 billion over the next decade to supplement vaccination programs worldwide.
