The Question: In Vaccine, CDDEP researchers and collaborators examine the implementation of the revised Causality Assessment Protocol (CAP) for Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) introduced by the World Health Organization and Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences in 2013.

What We Found: This study finds that the revised CAP was informative and useful in classifying most of the reviewed AEFIs in India, though unclassifiable reports could be reduced with more complete information from health records.

Why It Matters: Improvements in causality assessment and standardization in reporting between countries can improve public confidence in vaccine system performance and identify important vaccine safety signals. India is one of the first countries to have adopted the revised causality assessment protocol.
